Translation

Working as a Translator

I have worked as a translator for more than 10 years, beginning as a freelancer while studying for my MA in Applied Translation Skills for German and Japanese at the University of Leeds. Since then I have worked in house as a German to English automotive translator at one of the largest localization companies in the world. During my time as an in-house translator, I was also in charge of project management and quality assurance for several large Japanese projects for a number of high profile household name companies.

I am once again working as a freelance German and Japanese translator, now based out of San Francisco Bay Area (UTC-7). My experience both in-house and as a freelancer ensures that I am able to provide the highest quality translation with excellent turnaround, and reliable communication.

The sections below cover some of the subject domains I am most experienced with, and my approaches to each of them. However, I am happy to work in other fields – I have more than ten years of experience working in the legal and medical fields as well.

If you have questions or a project, please feel free to email me, or fill out my contact form!

  • I provide German and Japanese to English translation and review services for academics seeking to widen their reach by offering their research in English. Although my own academic field is linguistics, my translation expertise is wide-ranging, and my research skills are exceptional.

For prospective customers, expect some degree of collaboration and discussion. I take every effort to research the field for a given project, but to provide the best possible end result, your expertise is as valuable as my own! If you are open to this process, expect translation questions and multiple options for stylistic choice.

For students, I can offer competitive rates and I am happy to negotiate to fit your needs.

  • Automotive translation ranging from technical maintenance documentation to polished marketing material has been the majority of my work since my time as an in-house translator: as such, I am extremely experienced in this field!

I am happy and ready to provide both translation and review for all kinds of material in this field.

I maintain my own translation memories and term bases for this subject domain. These ensure that my translation choices are well researched, up to date and consistent. On request, I am happy to use a client’s style guide, term bases or translation memories.

  • My experience in technical translation encompasses everything from technical manuals to automated output libraries.

I have provided language services for many large companies and I am adept at implementing terminology and style guides to meet the rigorous demands of this kind of material.
